I got this little book as a stocking stuffer at Christmas. She says it and says it has good info.
I picked up several Sacramento hiking books along with this one.1) Small & compact = easy to carry with you on the hike!2) Information is concise with each of the following items:* Distance* Approximate hiking time* Difficulty - ranges from Easy to Moderate to More Challenging* Trail surface* Best season - lists out best time for bird watching vs. wild flowers, etc.* Other trail users - such as mountain bikes* Canine compatibility* Fees and permits* Schedule - hours/seasons open* Maps - where to get better maps of the area than the black & white simplified image provided in the book* Trail contact - who to call if you have questions* Special considerations - such as "stay on trail to avoid poison oak"* Additional informationAlso each section includes:* Finding the trailhead - driving directions on where to park your car to start your hike* Map with dotted line around a simple black & white drawing of area to show where you'll be hiking* The Hike - information on what you'll experience* Miles and Directions - such as milestones and when to turn on the next part of the trailAppendix has a checklist for the day hiker of items to bring on their hike.Realize this is a small book. There are only 16 routes in the entire book!!Thus its a good place to start for the novice hiker or someone new to the area.I live near Folsom Lake, which you can hike in any direction from multiple starting spots. The only hike provided was a 1.1 mile hike that may or may not be under water (review written prior to California drought still going on in 2015). I thought this was weak and wondered why it was selected for the book from all the other Folsom Lake options.I was looking at the 2008 book Top Trails Sacramento: Exploring Valley, Foothills, and Mountains in the Sacramento Region [TOP TRAILS SACRAMENTO] [Paperback], which is a much thicker book with more options. Both books covered Bobelaine Audubon Sanctuary trail. Nearly both books were identical, though the Top Trails books adds in vertical feet, trail type, facilities and features.Also this book was published in 2009. I appreciate the publisher in the front of the book saying that information gets outdated so contact them, but it seems the Trail Contact info provided is key in making sure you don't drive somewhere only to find the book info isn't relevant any longer. Thus call ahead!Overall, I'm a beginning hiker and love the size of this book, as it gives me some options to start off with.For what this book was intended to do -- give a sampling of some walks within 60min of Sacramento -- then it does what it set out to do.
