John B. Nici has a master's degree in art history and is retired from teaching at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst, New York. He is currently a Professor of Art History at Queens College in Flushing, New York. In 2004, he was the recipient of Queens College's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty. He has published extensively on art history pedagogy and has presented and published scholarly papers on topics that include Byzantine Art, Gothic Art, and Delacroix. He is the author of Famous Works of Art--and How They Got that Way.

This is the best book for studying for the AP Art History exam, I would argue that it is better than the Princeton review. I was always bad with history but having this book was a great supplement and it was a much better study aid than the Princeton. What I love about this book is that it includes comprehensive quizzes at the end of each chapter so you can see where you stand. A few months before AP exam week I was extremely stressed out about the upcoming exam. I ordered this book and every day for one month, I would go to school 30 mins early and review. I would review my notes for a chapter and then read the corresponding section in the Barron's review. One month later I took the AP exam and I got a 5!. I can't stress enough how amazing this review is. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get AP credit.
I teach AP art history, and this book is a required text, alongside Gardner's Art Through the Ages. Very thorough (includes all 250 objects), yet very concise. I also love the way that the content is broken down into more specific chapters (i.e. Italian Gothic and Gothic) rather than most reviews, which just leave all the objects together in their massive content areas (looking at you, Khan Academy!) Essential for high school art history teachers!
I took AP Art History this past semester, and cramming information about 250 pieces of art would've been significantly more difficult if I hadn't had this review book as a guide. I don't believe it contains all of the information you're expected to know, but it serves as a great supplement for class notes (and honestly, if you study from this book alone well enough, you could get a 4 and even a 5). I used this to study for exams (tip: Khan Academy has excellent resources for this AP) as well as for the AP exam itself, and I would definitely say it helped.Also -- if you have time, read the overview before each topic as well as the vocabulary at the end of each. It'll help with background for the essays, and the vocabulary will likely appear somewhere in the multiple choice.
Barron's was pressured to release this product, and thus rushed on producing this version. There are quite a few typos and some of the information does not match up. I still recommend this product, ​though, because it is the most updated study material for the redesigned AP test.
During a recent Parent Teacher Conference my son’s AP Art History teacher suggested this book. As soon as I got home I ordered it. When it came my son looked through it and said this will work. He used it last week to help him study for a test. He said it was the reason he received an “Aâ€.
Within the first two chapters found errors in practice exercises in Ancient New Eastern Art . There were three wrong answers on the Answer key and Answers explained. Maybe they were in hurry to get a redesign book out.
This text is a huge help in preparing for the AP Art History exam. The main points of each piece are noted and the comparative pieces are noted where applicable. Historical information is included for every content area and every piece is pictured. The CD-Rom is helpful too. My only criticism is that the book is printed on flimsy paper. Since this book is used to prepare for an exam it would be nice if the paper was a bit more sturdy and able to stand up to repeated use. The content is very good and offers the student every thing that they will need to score highly on the exam.
Okay. So not perfect, but a HUGE help in charting and navigating a course through the new choppy seas of the revised AP AH curriculum. Every little bit helps us get our sea legs. Glad I bought it. Definitely, check the work and the answers, but better than the alternatives...oh wait, there really Aren't many alternatives at this point.
