Set in the 4th century BCE, this gorgeously-written, masterful blend of fact and fiction exposes the raw passions, betrayals and victories of three strong women as they navigate politics and corruption in an ancient world at war. With famine weighing heavily in the Roman territories and its war coffers depleted, Rome is once again on the move. Political as well as blood alliances forged in previous battles are shattered under the Roman Consular General’s Northern military drive – a tactical move to extend Rome’s borders and claim dominion over the 12 adjacent city-states. Veii, the closest and most powerful of the twelve is the first to feel Rome’s metal. Caught in the cross-hairs of this ancient war are three women, one Roman, one Veientane and one walking the razor’s edge of conflicted loyalties, all with secrets that link their lives in ways they could never imagine.Caecilia, daughter of Rome, keeps her secret locked away in her heart. Decreed to wed Vel Mastarna of her rival city, Veii, Caecilia becomes a pawn in the politics of power. Having been previously recalled to Rome in a violent emotional tug-of-war, Caecilia’s love for her Veientane betrothed has only deepened, and from what Vel believes to have been a prophetic roll of his golden dice, Caecilia is back at his side. But Caecilia is a half-cast, straddling the wall between Rome and Veii, seen as a traitor to Rome and just another “Helen of Troy†to the people of Veii. And as the home and family she’s built in Veii is threatened she is forced to make choices that have the power to make history.Pinna, once the proud daughter of a Roman soldier, has lost everything except her will to survive. Reduced to the status of “night moth,†an unregistered prostitute, plying her trade among the gravestones, Pinna gathers knowledge and secrets that she uses to her advantage. And when a twist of fate opens up an unexpected opportunity Pinna calls upon her sly wit to breach the established Roman social hierarchy. But Pinna’s scheming does not go unnoticed and the secret of her “tomb whore†past threatens to be her undoing.Semni, a gifted Veientane craftswoman, craves the world of sensory experience. But her hunger for a fully sensual life leaves her with an illegitimate pregnancy and her cuckolded husband throws her into the street, penniless. Fate again intervenes, this time bringing Semni into Caecilia’s house as a servant. Although Semni’s circumstances are significantly reduced she has the opportunity for a new life and possibly for the first time, love. As Semni adjusts to the rhythms of her new home she turns a blind eye to what she thinks are minor indiscretions of another servant girl. But she soon learns that her silence endangers Caecilia’s household and may cost her the man she loves.“The Golden Dice†is the second installment of Elisabeth Storrs’s award-winning “Tales of Ancient Rome†series. In it the author delivers engaging, believable characters infused with compassion, intelligence and unrelenting strength with a level of historical detail, both fact and fictional, that transport the reader to all of the glory and turmoil of ancient Rome.Readers who’ve enjoyed the passion and extraordinary historical detail of Renault’s “Alexander Trilogy†and Thornton’s “The Conqueror’s Wife†will love “The Golden Dice.†A great read!
There was a comment I read somewhere in Goodreads comparing The Wedding Shroud's Caecilia with Bella Swan of Twilight. I couldn't disagree more. And disagree violently, I will. From what I've read on Ancient Rome (and I've read lots), proper Roman women were supposed to be virtual wallflowers—simple, hardworking and most of all, subservient to their men. Having brought up in this stringent world, it was expected of Caecilia to be confused and conflicted when she was thrust into the colorful, "loose" world of the Rasenna. Imagine the horror she felt, the depression, as she was confronted with the reality that she was supposed to go against every fiber of who she thought she was. And Caecilia was forced to change her values because she was not married to just any Etruscan, she was married to a noble. Caecilia is an unforgettable heroine, and one of my all-time favorites.Ms. Storrs deftly continues her beautiful, indelible story in The Golden Dice. She is a great storyteller, with a knack for choosing the right words that never fails to strike the right note in the Ancient Rome lover's heart. I love stories set in the late Roman republic, but now I feel exhilarated to explore a new Ancient Roman world. I can't wait to read the next installment in this (trilogy? series? please, please say series).I couldn't thank the heavens enough for self-publishing. Ms. Storrs, please don't stop writing.
War has waged for 7 years since Caecilia returned to Mastarna. She has given him 3 sons and tries to make up for the things the people of Veii have done to him for having a Roman wife. This story centers around 3 women: Caecilia, who lives the life of luxury in the deprivations of war, Semni, whose artisan family married her to an old man who kicked her out for bearing a bastard son, and Pinna, whose soldier father went into debt and lost his freedom leaving her and her mother to work as prostitutes at the graveyard. Each woman had little choice in the road fortune lead them on but took the risk of trying to change their fates. Each has to come to terms with the losses they faced and take a chance on their own determination to protect themselves and the ones they love in the war between the Etruria and Rome.Caecilia still must face the prejudice against her being Roman and blamed for a war that was going to happen anyway. There is still danger from the King of a rival house and her brother-in-law, a priest of the death cult. Semni was an artisan whose patron was Caecilia. She is young, beautiful and self-centered, but she has an abiding passion for Arruns, Mastarna's Phoenician bodyguard. She is a friend of Aricia, Caecilia's trusted nanny who she gave her mother the money to free them both before she tried to avert war and death by going back to Rome. Aricia gets her a job as a servant so she and her baby do not starve. Aricia is supposed to marry Arruns, but wants to be a priestess of the Death Cult, even though her birth forbids it.In the meantime, Caecilia's Roman Patrician cousin Marcus and his friend Drusus who wanted to marry her both claim to hate her. Pinna is working the tombs when the rain starts and she ducks into a tomb where two noble officers are doing forbidden magic curses against Mastarna and Caecilla. Drusus does a love spell after Marcus leaves and Pinna saw her chance to better her fortune and blackmails Drusus. She is able to give her dying mother warmth, food and a funeral before she is robbed and forced to be a brothel whore. One day Drusus and Marcus come into the brothel to get out of the rain. Drusus rapes her and Marcus watches and then shuts off the lamp and takes her. Pinna is intelligent and desperate. She has to escape the life before she gets the pox and decides to blackmail Marcus with his love for Drusus. She offers to become his army "wife", a better position than the one she was in. She travels with Marcus, Drusus and Camillus the famous general to attack Vaii. There are strange signs and another crazy king. What will be the fate in store for these three women and their children? A good historical love story that delves deeply into the social norms of both societies and makes a great read. Now I have to buy the third one.
