Love, love, love this book. My son is 11 and suffered from anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, ADD and general learning disabilities. I don't know which of those is the worst. After trying medication that he was allergic to, out of desperation we tried an elimination diet. It took some time but I we are so greatful that we did it. He has a brain allergy to preservstives, artificial color, BHA, TBHQ, soy lecithin and MSG (which is in everything with loads of different names). When he has real, whole home made foods, he's a new kid. A happy, outgoing, interested in school kid. As a plus, his allergies and asthma are gone. He got the flu over Xmas, which would normally send him to the ER for a breathing treatment and prednisone and he was fine. Sick, but fine. I can count on 1 hand how many allergy pills he's had in 4 months instead of everyday. I have bought 5 copies of this book and have given them to my kids school, my pediatrician and some strangers that I struck up a conversation with. It's worth it.
A month prior to reading Ms. Simontacchi's book, I had met with my primary doctor and he strongly urged me to lose weight (as usual) and reduce my sugar intake. In the four weeks before reading 'The Crazy Makers,' I lost 10 pounds, a great deal of my depression and anger as well as my energy has increased significantly. It simply isn't just because I'm sporting less weight that this has occurred. Sugar and processed foods have a significant effect on my mental health. Reading through the author's argument, much of the material was old news to me and it became obvious that my anecdotal experience seemed very similar in results to what Mr. Simontacchi advocates.With that said, mercy, the book is a bone-dry read. I found 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser and 'Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health' by Marion Nestle to be better written and more interesting. I lost count how many times I was overcome by MEGO Syndrome (My Eyes Glazed Over) while reading 'The Crazy Makers.' Her writing style is more in line with a college dissertation. Also, some reviewers took great exception or felt she was thoroughly discredited by Ms. Simontacchi praising God in her introduction as well as mentioning Focus on the Family run by religious zealot James Dobson. Granted, as an agnostic, I found her religious associations did give me pause, but it's not like the lady was saying if the people would simply accept God then everything would be hunky-dory. There is some solid info in this baby.Ms. Simontacchi is a big proponent of breastfeeding, abstaining from sugar as well as artificial sweetners and getting back to basics about eating fresh and not processed foods. She also takes to task rampant coffee consumption, low-fat diet fads, and pretty much anything popping out of the industrialized food business.The author repeatedly acknowledges that many aspects of food consumption and brain dynamics are still scientifically unanswered and that she makes many assumptions based upon inferences. Ms. Simontacchi's heart is in the right place, but other authors give a better presentation.
This book is the same as all of the articles that I read everywhere. It is really a compilation of them all. Informative and a lot of it makes sense. There is a lot of chemicals, etc in everything. Fresh is the best, watch out for the GMO's.
I read this one with great interest and found much that made me think (and re-think) my family's diet. However, there were also some sections of this book that could have been omitted, many repetitions and more than a few recipes that my family wouldn't touch (and for good reason, the food was tasteless). However, I was able to use the author's suggestions of good foods to make my own meal plans and I found her information about the typical American diet to be intriguing and worthwhile. She also provides fascinating research about how food affects mood and how children and adults with ADD, depression and other conditions may improve their mood and behavior by dietary changes. All in all, a worthwhile read with some uneven sections.
Outstanding book easy to read- for Moms with ADHD children and adults with ADHD issues, highly recommended for all those who struggle with mental health issues every day. Nutrition and mental health aspects are thoroughly reviewed.
This book provided some very interesting insights into the food industry. A must read for mothers with children who have developmental problems. I purchased it to read more about the natural additive Annatto, which I've discovered I'm very sensitive to.
Well researched. I knew the writer and received assistance from her regarding diet for a gastric problem. She was quite knowledgeable on the subject of diet.
