Review

"The authors have created a comprehensive biography of Gene Kelly that balances his extensive career with his complex private life. Although there have been several biographical studies published about this Irish American star, He's Got Rhythm is by far the most detailed and encompassing work on its subject. This book should become the new definitive biography on the multitalented Gene Kelly."―James Robert Parish, author of The Hollywood Book of Extravagance"Any biographer of Gene Kelly had better be light on his/her literary feet. The Bridesons have given us a thoroughly readable biography of Kelly that is conscientiously researched and authoritative."―Page Laws, Norfolk State University"[R]eaders will get a well-documented recounting of a man who, despite shortcomings, believed that 'true talent seems to show itself most often in kindness.'"―Library Journal"The Brideson sisters―the authors of Ziegfeld and His Follies―cover Kelly's professional story in full detail. . . . He's Got Rhythm provides a comprehensive overview enhanced by references to many previously published works."―Jeanine Basinger, New York Times Book Review"A solidly written and researched biography."―Book Reviews by David Marshall James"A stellar new work."―Open Letters Monthly"The authors' expansive knowledge of – and equally expansive affection and respect for – their subject is unmistakable, to say nothing of infectious. It's an extensively researched, expertly assembled, and almost compulsively readable chronicle of a talent who made it to the top through sheer determination, hard work, and not a little talent."―Yes! Weekly"The Brideson sisters cover Kelly's professional story in full detail."―New York Times Book Review"Cynthia and Sara Brideson's comprehensive biography He's Got Rhythm: The Life and Career of Gene Kelly expands on periods in the multihyphenate performer's career not already covered in other biographies."―Movie City News"The book is an engaging, thoughtful, and comprehensive look at the great hoofer."―AV Club"He's Got Rhythm is a balanced and compelling view of one of the screen's most enduring legends."―Lane Report"In this superb book, Cynthia Brideson and her late sister Sara Brideson bring us what will likely become the definitive biography of Gene Kelly, as they pay tribute to both an innovative creative artist, who was also a devoted parent and caring citizen of the world."―TheaterJones.com"Cynthia Brideson and Sara Brideson have written a wonderful, readable and enjoyable biography of Gene Kelly."―Bismarck Tribune"This book is an excellent tribute to Kelly, which makes a strong case for his art and his enduring popularity."―Great Old Movies"The book meticulously details the production of Kelly's films with emphasis on his dance and choreography. More interesting is delving into his personal life as Kelly guarded his privacy. Even if not a Gene Kelly fan as I am, the biography is a good read to learn about this hoofer."―My Lot

After reading the 1st 100 pages, I'm so impressed with the depth of the research and seeing pictures previously unknown to most of the public. This book is thoroughly enjoyable with a unique writing style that flows effortlessly off the pages. It is hard to put it down. I don't know whether to race through it or take my time and enjoy the view. Having read virtually every other book on Gene, I was standing at my door waiting for this one and it was worth the wait. Stay tuned for further updates.

A comprehensive look at the life and career of Gene Kelly. However, the authors seemed to rely primarily on other biographies done on Kelly. They did interview Kelly's daughter Kerry which provided some insight. However, I felt that the authors were enamored of Kelly as while they hinted at a darker side, they did not explore it as thoroughly as they should have Additionally, they seemed to feel that every film Kelly did, he was perfect in. There was quite a bit of praise for An American in Paris (which I cannot stand) but little for Brigadoon (which I think is charming). There was an error on Page 405 where they said Debbie Reynolds passed away in January of 2017 when it was actually December of 2016. This is the first biography I have read of Kelly and while comprehensive, left me wanting another view. I remember reading sometime ago that there was little to no affection in his last marriage but that was not explored at all. I feel like I need to some other works about Kelly to obtain a less prejudiced view.

Incredibly detailed and candid biography of Gene Kelly. Kelly's impact on the American musical was monumental in the 1950's and "Singin' in the Rain" is, of course, still regarded as a film classic, having been revived as a Broadway production in recent years. In spite of the ongoing affection for his work, there hasn't been a great deal of information on Kelly the man out there. This book solves that problem with a sometimes overwhelming amount of information on each and every Kelly project over the years, but it doesn't solve another--how to make the last twenty years or so of his life interesting. His professional activity in those years consisted of directing films that weren't very good or acting in ones that were close to embarrassing ("Xanadu" and, unbelievably,"Viva Knievel!" where he played Evel Knievel's mechanic!). But, up until you reach that period, it's a very good read, giving plenty of insight into Kelly's personality, his relationships and his approach to his craft. Kelly doesn't come across as the most likable of guys, but his drive for excellence is undeniable and his legacy unforgettable.

As one who knew Mr Kelly, I find this book is an exceptionally well-researched, detailed, and balanced presentation of him, his background, and his "inner workings." In my opinion, this is the definitive biography of the man. I especially appreciated all of the interviews with family members and the pain-staking attention to detail. Great job! Thank you!!

I was entertained throughout this book. Getting a glimpse of his life development opened my eyes to what made him the great performer he was. As noted in the book, he was a perfectionist who kept driving himself through his career never fully satisfied with his performances. He lived a long and full life dedicated to those who sought out his works, but later in life, he dedicated himself to his family. If you enjoy Hollywood biographies you will not be disappointed in this one.

The book is wonderfully researched, but suffers from the point it makes over and over again: this was a very private man whose public image belied his private self. So it can be difficult to get to know him other than through his work, which is likely the way he wanted it. The book is also very necessary, as Kelly had been ill-served by biographers, unlike Fred Astaire. The detail afforded his television work is particularly illuminating. In the end, the book is a workmanlike account of a Hollywood A Lister, whose work has transcended time and tastes. Other accounts of Kelly paint a cockier, more abrasive. more fanatical man, as Debbie Reynolds has written about him. The authors portray someone more likeable. He was the right person in the right place at the right time, surrounded by the right people, with the right ambition and the right screen presence and the right talent and the right vehicles and the right flaws and the right virtues. The authors do capture that. It's funny that after all these years that there is still a question as to how tall he was: personally, I think the authors got it wrong.

I enjoyed the book in the sense it added a few tidbits of info from interviews however I did feel the researchwas not her own but borrowed from other books on Gene, the extra photos were nice (some never seen before) butI am a serious biography reader & I just found it lacking in depth, of course this my view-point only)!

This is a comprehensive, although somewhat dry, recounting of the life of a very interesting man, and much more than just a dancer. I've learned a lot, but it reflects research by others, which I wasn't expecting.
