I enjoyed this book, as an easy vacation read. The story was heartfelt and some of the writing was very good. As a wine lover, I really enjoyed the wine making information. With that said, the plot was really lacking for me. It was very obvious that the element keeping the couple apart was a non issue, and felt untrue to the main character that she never questioned her own assumption. Once the couple finally did get together, it felt like the author didn't know what to do with them. The story was extremely rushed at that point, unlike the rest of the book. The author also inserted a (predictable) plot twist to bring the couple apart again. It felt very contrived, and the male character reacted in a way that felt untrue to his character and mildly disturbing. This was never explained or even apologized for, which spoiled the love story for me. So overall, I think this author has good potential but the ending of this story was unsatisfying and not well thought out.
This is a light and easy read which was just what I was looking for after having read some rather intense novels before this one. It is a delightful romp through Southern France's countryside and if like me you know little about wine you get an education on that as well. Gina is the protagonist who is from England but has recently lost her job, her boyfriend, and her favorite aunt in a matter of months. Her aunt leaves Gina a house in France and she decides to move there and start over. Nothing unusual in the fact that the first day there she runs into a very handsome Frenchman and sparks fly. What is unusual is that Gina is conflicted about her feelings for said Frenchman and you'll have to read the book to find out why.Of course bad things start happening. She finds out a family secret she would have rather not known. Her roof falls in during a storm and she makes a very embarrassing faux pas while speaking French to the workmen in her home. While all this brings her down she also makes a lot of new friends, starts school to be a Master Wine Taster (there evidently are very few in the world), and really grows as a person. She begins to truly lover her new adopted country.Valpy's writing is superb. She writes elegantly and very descriptively and it makes you feel as though you are seeing what she is describing with your own eyes. All the characters are wonderfully written and you will miss them after you finish the book. I know others have already said this but it is the perfect summer book.
I just wanted a fun, clean, love story to enjoy (and who doesn’t love a story of inheriting a house and going to see whether it’s a pig-in-a-poke or something wonderful?). This one blew it out of the park! It was so interesting how she wove learning about vineyards and wine through the story line, I loved the French aspect of the setting, and the characters were well-written. It was pure pleasure to read. The moment I finished this book I immediately bought the second two, I could tell that it would be worth every penny and I couldn’t wait to read them.
The French For Love by Fiona ValpyThis author takes you on a dream, puffs of clouds, very adventurous for these two whom are looking for a chance to a happy ending together. He talks her into selling everything they own to get financial backing for their dream to own a chateau in France for a vacation get a way or a wedding venue, celebrations. They buy this rundown chateau and begin a life long dream to convert it into a beautiful vision, all their dreams are tied up in this hotel and catering business. They work hard in transforming the surroundings of the chateau as well as the rooms, outer buildings, and gardens to be the most sort after for many brides and family's, all their dreams to come true. The boyfriend whom seems to want the same things, turns out to be a total misconception and he leaves her to find her own way to make this dream a reality, come true. With help from several of her new friends and a guy who seems to be wanting a change from his family and their winery, help her to transform a disappointment into a successful working partnership and more.I thought this love story, adventure to be a brave way to restructure one's life and take on renewed dreams and hopes. It can be done with love and hard work. Never give up on your dreams. You just never know what's around the corner. Thank you. Enjoy.
I really enjoyed the book The French for Love by Fiona Valpy. I read it all in one day rather than grading papers or preparing for classes or doing laundry for my son who goes back to college next week. Gina, the main character, lives in the UK and is in her late 20s. Major life changes in the past year spin her into a whirlwind. Her father died, her favorite aunt who lived in France died, her live-in boyfriend left her for another woman, and she lost her job as a wine purchaser for a small wine shop. When her aunt leaves the French house to Gina, she decides to move to France. Well, the word "love" is in the title, so you can guess that there is a hunky Frenchman involved. But the book goes deeper than that too as she learns a secret about her aunt and has to choose between love and career.Since the main character knows a lot about wine, I found myself longing for a glass of wine throughout the book. I wanted to join in.I like that the main character is strong, and parts of the book remind me of a Victorian novel in that many of the confusions come from simply not talking about the problem.I'd probably give this book a 4.5 out of 5 if I could.
I loved this book. It was light, yet i was able to get immersed in it. I loved the descriptions of france, food, and wine. It made me want to be there! I loved the characters (although i would've liked to know a bit more about them ).I can't say much else because I would want to give too much away. But if you love dreamy summer reads, then this is the one for you!It was a lovely romantic book with a delicious happy ending. Just how i like my reads! :)I would definitely recommend this book, and I can't wait to read another from this author.
