Ed Mazria, Founder and CEO of Architecture 2030 A PREFERRED FUTURE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE From bestselling author Douglas Farr comes Sustainable Nation: Urban Design Patters for the Future. His first book, Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature, helped shift the focus of urban sustainability from the stand-alone building to the high-performance neighborhood. Given the urgency of the many challenges that society now faces, Sustainable Nation hopes to accomplish an even more dramatic shift: to focus on how long change takes and the many ways to drive change faster than ever before. The book posits that society can overcome our major challenges around decarbonization in four generations: the lifetime of a child born today. Sustainable Nation: Urban Design Patterns for the Future presents in four parts: Our Default World: an infographic snapshot of today that triggers empathy; Our Preferred Future: fictional short stories and timelines that evoke a preferred future; Theory of Change: a sobering deep dive into how long change takes and an ultimately hopeful cataloging of how to speed it up; and Patterns of Change: immediately actionable guidance from development experts on how groups of people, not affiliated with government, can accelerate desired neighborhood and professional change. Readers will find that this book: Provides an understanding of the future of urban trends and design Recognizes that to address climate change, one must overcome irrational quirks of the human brain (heuristics) through framing, nudges, and by restitching our torn social fabric Challenges culture by providing practitioners, students, and local actors with urban design patterns that can be immediately applied to guide the betterment of neighborhoods Sustainable Nation seeks to shift the sustainability conversation towards the issue of how to change faster than ever before. It is an ideal guidebook for urban designers, planners, policymakers, architects, engaged stakeholders, and anyone who is eager to make a positive impact on ourand our descendants'buildings, cities, and lives.

As a real estate investor and developer focusing on competitive advantage, I have not found a better compendium that serves to keep me, my partners, and project teams, current and connected to leading edge practice and theory in our built world. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment!
Optimistic and visionary in the face of unpleasant truths and global realities. A good text for community planners and those making public policy although currently "sustainability" seems off the table at the highest levels. Climate change is a reality world wide and the earth is already in crisis. Anyone trying to redirect efforts and make a "sustainable nation" seem to be a viable reality, deserves some credit. One hopes that people who can affect change will pay attention. Sadly, the United States is the least likely industrial country to take these steps.
Though often linked with large planning projects, one of the many great promises of New Urbanism is the potential to act through smaller-scale developments that effectuate change at the local level. As such, the author’s perspective is rife with the philosophy of thinking globally and acting locally, with the book laying-out out a pathway to a new future derived from an equal measure of optimism and concern. The first half of the book opens with a statistical portrayal of the world – both socially and environmentally – presented through charts, diagrams, and tables; followed by a brief manifesto of a program for change. The second half of the book comprises a series of 70 ‘patterns,’ or design strategies to employ, each presented as a short but well-illustrated snapshot of a given topic, typically written by a guest author and organized into one of nine subcategories. Deriving from a diverse set of criteria, these patterns provide a comprehensive overview of New Urbanist principles. The architect’s own built work is limited to a brief section presented at the end of the opening chapter and includes twelves projects. The final product successfully demonstrates how architects can link sustainable building strategies with the traditional principals of New Urbanism, and provides a clear remedy to the critique that New Urbanist projects derive merely from a superficial formalism.
How long will it take to turn the trend of our deteriorating environment? Gulp! The answer may be painful, but this read is full of in-depth research and digestible anecdotes that support why design matters. It inspires us to believe we are not powerless. Beautiful imagery and diagrams explain an array of complicated forces that impact the places we live, work and call home.Doug Farr and his leading guest authors teach us to re-frame the agonizing issues of climate change, obesity, and sprawl - into challenges with opportunities. Each American should attack this book with gusto and arm themselves with a few “Pattern Tools†that they understand well; you can become the local actor working for a healthy environment. This campaign to create a sustainable future is larger than oneself and each pattern depicts progress. A must read for anyone who desires leaving the next generation a beautiful planet to call home.
We have a couple of urban design programs/majors. I asked a couple of students to look/work through parts of the book and tell me what they thought of it. Both were enthusiastic, and thought that material from the book could and should be folded into a couple of different courses.
Doug and Sydney have assembled a diverse chorus of experts to outline the design patterns necessary to create an equitable and sustainable world in four generations. Reading it reminded me of a concept from the book Democracy Of Bees - that bees determine who to follow to their new hive by the vigor of their waggle dance. Doug is dancing up a storm as he tells us how to design and govern the communities that will reverse obesity, carbon pollution and sprawl. I highly recommend you follow him by reading Sustainable Nation.
I read the book for a podcast interview I did with Doug and found it had a lot of features that books about design don't have these days. A clear goal and action items for change. Not only does the book go into the things people in many different professions can do to improve their neighborhoods, it gives us the psychology behind human thinking and the magnitude of the problems we're facing in easily digested charts and imagery. A must read for students and professionals alike.
Comprehensive and manageable material. Optimistic outlook with setting clear goals and feasible paths. Great for incorporating into undergraduate courses. Interesting read.
