The Girl in the Ice is a well-written, suspense-filled thriller set in South London in the UK. In addition to enjoying the setting, I was immediately drawn in by the pacing and characters. We briefly meet the socialite who will be murdered and found beneath the ice in a pond, then are introduced to Detective Erika Foster who has been chosen to lead the investigation into the girl’s death. Erika comes with plenty of her own baggage, a backstory that’s told with just enough detail to help explain her in-your-face attitude toward the girl’s high-society parents who do their best to control her investigation. Erika’s headstrong ways get her into plenty of trouble with her commanding officers and others, and her efforts are thwarted by male colleagues (who we know will get their comeuppance when she solves the case!).The story is told from multiple points of view, including that of the killer who is always kept gender-neutral, adding to the suspense right up to the end. While sometimes it was hard to believe that Erika’s commanding officer would be as understanding as he was in the face of outright mutiny, her relationships with her fellow investigators Moss and Peterson were credible and added to the story. As mentioned previously, the pacing was a major draw for me: things kept happening, and there was never a dull moment nor a sense of “why was that passage in there?” I did have to look up some British terms, such as “off-licence,” but that simply added to the sense of being in an interesting, unfamiliar setting.I’m pleased to note that this is the first in a three-part crime thriller series. I will look forward to the next installment.

I had plans today. I was going to do some Stuff...and thangs. But then I started this book.We had hotdogs for dinner and they were dang lucky to get them. I did not want to put this sucker down.A young, rich social type girl is found under the ice in the water in South London's less fortunate section. She has been brutally murdered and Daddy is having a fit wanting some one to pay. They call in Detective Erika Foster to lead the investigation, but every-time she starts to find out something her hands get smacked. The girl who died, Andrea may not have been the darling that the family wants her portrayed as.Erica has a past also, she led a team that ended with her husband being killed so she is being watched from all angles. The thing is..Erica has nothing. No home to go home too, no one missing her. So she will not stop even when she is pulled from the case. She discovers that Andrea is not the only woman that was killed in the same fashion and why has no one connected the dots before?Oh yeah, that snotty family that keeps calling in favors from the big wigs. I wanted to punch them in the face. The author does a really good job of pulling the reader back and forth and feeling Erica's frustration with the politics that seem to take charge in any kind of investigation. Her determination to get to the truth also makes this character stand out. She gives no s***s to what anyone thinks. This was a really decent thriller and it's the authors first book, I'm excited to see where he takes Erica's character.

Today I would like to talk about a book I finished devouring last Friday: The Girl In The Ice, from Robert Bryndza.I actually think I will have to rank down Sister, because this book really has me eager for more of DCI Erika Foster and well elaborated thrillers. lolNot sure whether I am the only one, but I feel I can’t write that much of a thriller book in the review – it feels like it contains spoiler if I do so lol.So DCI Foster, our investigator and main character, is called back to London to help solving the murder of the daughter of a very important man, and she will face a lot of struggles to be able to keep her investigations, despite her strong will and determination to solve the case. What seemed, at first, a regular murder case, but turning out to be a very deeper story, with many more variables and intrigues. The book starts as one of those regular thriller stories, but in this one I did not have a suspect since the beginning… It took me a lot of pages to start elaborating the profile of my suspect, and I confess I changed my mind a couple of times and I just found out who the killer was in the end.I am eager to read Robert Bryndza’s second book, which has also Erika Foster as a main character – it is called The Night Stalker.Hope you have a chance to read it, and tell me what you think!Have a great week!!!!Denise

A fun read, BUT:I concluded early in the book that NOBODY HAD READ IT CAREFULLY BEFORE IT WENT TO PRESS! It is full of typographical errors, wrong words (bad spell-ckecking?), and other annoying things an editor should have have flagged. Then there are also minor inconsistencies(Linda's dead cat is variously described as male and female; the primary suspect, who is Romanian, is described as having a Russianaccent; and at one point Erika is in a crowd that "approached Marble Arch tube station", but a page later "reached Bond Street tube stationand ground to a halt"; mixing of British and American idioms). And simple head-scratchers, like a picture of Andrea and Barbora wearing two of Linda's cat sweaters; but Linda was the cat person, and was big as a ..., while Andrea and Barbora weren't. And the unlikely police stuff: the case was originally assigned as a missing personscase to a station south of the Thames river, near where the body was found, BEFORE the body was found there; Erika's people obtain bankrecords overnight and without a court order. And cliches, cliches, cliches.I wondered if the book was a test to see if anybody was paying attention.
