I'm not new to the world of eating lots of greens I've been doing it for many years. At first you may have a difficult time getting use to raw foods especially greens but you will get use to it and start to look forward to them especially when you notice how good you feel once you've cleansed your body and begin to feel your youthful energy return. You don't have to go all out "veggie head rambo" to reap the benefits, just incorporating these foods into your diet will make you feel better and in return make you want to eat less junk. The book gives lots of good information on the benefits of greens as well as lots of testimonials and some recipes.Overall it's a good book on the subject but I thought it was heavy on testimonials and light on recipes especially recipes with more green and less fruit. I prefer my green smoothies with far less fruit in them and all the recipes here are packed with fruit. Greens taste good to me I don't need all that sugar! This is a good starting point book if you are new to this concept though. Newcomers will probably like the sweeter recipes to start, just know you don't have to follow a recipe to make a good green smoothie, they are great with just a banana added to the greens or an apple! Also know that you will need a high dollar blender like a Vita-mix to make these recipes smooth enough to drink, these can run 500.00, They are worth it though! I got mine second hand for half of that.A note on green shakes: I am hypoglycemic and need protein often. I like to add whey protein powder to my green smoothies. I use an unsweetened/unflavored one called Bio-stack made by Factory Direct Protein to make sure I am getting a complete protein. I also add psyllium husks and dried apple fiber, flax meal and oatmeal for extra fiber!
Suffering from chemo-caused peripheral neuropathy, my chiropractor sent me to a class on how to incorporate raw foods into my diet. I got far more than I expected in these three hours. The presenter brought two high-speed blenders, utensils, a food dryer, and lots of fresh produce into the classroom. She showed us two books after demonstrating how to make green smoothies, and serving us each an 8 oz glass of a delicious drink. She told us about Victoria Boutenko and how what she learned from this scientist had changed her life. She provided us with facts about the nutrient content of various greens and other ingredients and read some anecdotes from the book.Since I had a very high trust level for my chiropractor's wisdom I bought the book and became immersed in Boutenko's nutrition journey of understanding. I wanted to continue the nerve healing that my chiropractor had started in my extremities so I was open to implementing many of her suggestions. My nerves are nearly completely healed and that I attribute in part to the enzyme cocktails I regularly imbibe in now. My receding hairline has begun to fill back in, continuing still after a year. I sleep better. I have increased energy. I crave the greens like never before. I highly recommend the book for the vast information it provides about the benefits of eating much more raw foods than ever I did before.
I recommend everyone add more organic green smoothies as a way to add raw veggies and fruit and this book is got great information why green smoothies are an easy way to improve your health. To her credit in this new edition she adds a whole section on getting more Omega-3s and reducing Omega-6s (less seeds and nuts) because of her health struggles and how she is now less than 100% raw as a result. What lacks is the details of how she gets enough Omega-3s. The title of the new chapter is "Greens: The Original Source of Omega-3s". Which implies she's getting them from greens. However the list of greens in that chapter show that most greens have way more omega-6s. So it is not clear to me how she gets the proper ratio of Omega-3s to Omega-6s and why she is now less than 100% raw. Now she does talk about chia and flax seeds as a source of Omega-3s, which I do and is common knowledge, but I would have preferred more specific information about the amount of seed and which seeds she eats to get that ratio to the proper value. Getting enough Omega-3s from a vegan diet is controversial (you can add a algae based omega 3 supplement but most also contain an omega-6 oil) that is not fully answered to me at least in this book.
If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, then you should read this book. If you want to lose weight, gain weight or just feel great, you should read this book. (and eat more raw veggies). Victoria Boutenko is the queen of raw foods. Yes many others came after her, but she is one tough and disciplined lady and she has really spent much time understanding the way foods heal our bodies. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is interested in changing from the SAD diet or needs a reason or wants to be motivated to do so.
Totally, totally love Green for Life--because this is definitely what I aspire to be, GREEN FOR LIFE. I have yet to read one of Victoria's books about smoothies and not be inspired to work harder at healthy living. I am not privileged to find all of the ingredients that make up her recipes, but...I love to blend in the ones I am privied to. I practice a WFPB diet, and I love it. I have been making smoothies for about 5 years, and I plan to NEVER stop. It's funny, most of my friends and those who have been guests at our home, when they meet each other or are in the company of each other, they ALWAYS ask if the other has ever had one of my green smoothies. The ones who haven't (which are few) fuss at me for not having made one for them, the rest talk about the ones I've made them. I would say about 99 percent of those who have had my smoothies have become converts. I was an avid juicer before doing green smoothies, and I must credit Victoria Boutenko and her family for the switch. So, if you want to drink healthy, life giving beverages, and you need a place to start or if you already do the green thing and would like to expand your collection of recipes, and be encouraged while you do it, Green for Life is a great place to start.
