From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3—All around the world, children wait for Santa Claus, Papai Noel, Father Christmas, or Grandfather Frost and leave sweet treats for him to enjoy. In Malawi, children thank Father Christmas with mbatata (sweet potato cookies). In France, children leave carrots, oats, or apples inside shoes for Gui, Père Noël's donkey, and a slice of yule log with a glass of wine. And in the United States, children hang their stockings and leave a glass of milk and a cookie for Santa Claus. Each page depicts a Christmas scene and the holiday desserts in charming, brightly colored illustrations by Gal. Each page will leave readers hungry for cookies and curious to try new confections. An author's note and nine recipes are appended. VERDICT A mouthwatering choice for classrooms and libraries.—Jessica Ko, Los Angeles Public Library

A mouthwatering choice for classrooms and libraries." –School Library Journal "Vibrant, glowing illustrations show children of different ethnic groups along with cultural traditions and decorations. The Christmas-cookie traditions of 32 countries (or sometimes a city or a state) are each described in a short paragraph, including the type of cookie, local name for Santa, and fun, related Christmas customs that will interest children . . . A delightful introduction to a popular Christmas treat and traditions around the world." —Kirkus "Furman’s first children’s book takes readers on an appetizing world tour of Christmas traditions, highlighting the treats children leave for Santa and his regional counterparts..." —Publishers Weekly "Charmingly illustrated throughout by Susan Gal, 'A World of Cookies for Santa' is a truly multicultural celebration that families will return to year after year."--Midwest Book Review

We got this book to learn more about Christmas traditions around the world. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and playful. The text is long enough to keep older children interested but not too long to lose the interest of really young ones. You do go on a journey around the world and you get a good sampling of Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America, and little from Africa.Santa rides a donkey or a camel in some places so this was a bit challenging to explain to my 5 year old - why does Santa ride these there but not his reindeer? Overall, we really enjoyed this book and there are several recipes at the end of the book but my older son and I both wanted each treat listed in the book to have a recipe at the end. She gave us very few of the recipes that she talked about in the story. We can look them up but it would be nice to have them in the book and you cook your way through Christmas making something new to add to your Christmas traditions.
Although my husband and I are Christians and celebrate Christmas with our kids as the birth of Jesus (as well as participating in the Santa story), I want my boys to have an understanding that not everyone celebrates the way we do. I try to educate them on other cultures and beliefs, so when they cross paths with someone who has a different background or belief system, they respond positively. I want them to understand that our world is made up of hundreds of different people and places, but regardless how different we may seem on the outside, we are sometimes more alike that in seems. This book takes us on Santa's journey throughout several countries on Christmas Eve, and details how different parts of the world celebrate their winter holiday (the book assumes they're all a version of Christmas). At the end of the book, there are six recipes for a region's traditional cookie, which gives you an opportunity to make the cookies with your kids.
Sweet book about Santa's travels around the world on Christmas Eve through the eyes of children and the treats they leave him. We used this book in my classroom during our Holidays Around the World unit, and we even made some of the cookies mentioned in the book. A long book for a one-time read aloud, so plan to break the book up into sections for younger kids to engage in and enjoy.
This was a fascinating book! It described Christmas traditions in about two dozen countries - not only what kind of cookies and beverage children leave in various countries, but also the different names for Santa, the various animals Santa rides (reindeer, donkeys, horses), and in some cases, whether children actually interact with Santa when he comes! My elementary school students loved this book, and it was very useful for practicing the skill of comparing and contrasting!
Super cute book. Photos were vibrant and we loved reading about all the places and different traditions. Bonus was the recipes. With that said this book took forever to come (Like over a month) and when it finally did just barley in time for Christmas eve it arrived damaged. The entire book was bent. I had no time to return it so I kept it but it was definatley a bummer deal. I thought I had already wrote this review but it just popped up so I figured Id comment on my experience.
I love this book, but it was a bit too advanced for my 3 year old. I'm hanging onto it to use a bit more in the years to come! I think it would be appropriate for an elementary aged child.
I loved reading this to the kids, going over the different traditions, geography and names for Santa. I had to give it 3 Stars, though, because *while I certainly didn’t expect to be able to make every recipe considering our allergens,* I was surprised to find that almost all the chosen recipes rely heavily on tree nuts or coconut (not just add-ins you can leave out). We are only able to make 3 of the types of cookies from the recipe section as a result. I am going to google some of the cookies, drinks and food featured that didn’t get added to the recipe section of the book to try to make more use of the book.
Bought this as a gift, but loved the concept of it. It follows Santa all around the world and goes in order of the countries/states he visits. Cookie recipes at the end sound very delicious.
