I made the purchase because I am very interested in the subject of work life balance. This is a powerful, thoughtful look at life, death and balance. O'Kelly and his wife gave us a give a gift - a roadmap for making the most of a death sentence. I have to admit that I was a little melancholy while reading this - that's just what happens when you contemplate your death, I guess. The lessons, however, were worth it. One thought, in particular, was very powerful to me. O'Kelly talks about he wanted to be the CEO of his death - he wanted to make the last three months of his life the best months of his life. And, he is constantly on the lookout for "perfect moments."While you never hear the word, "mindfulness," that's really what he's talking about as the major lesson. In fact, he seems to relate that the majority of his life was lived in a mindLESS manner where he went from meeting to meeting running a Big 4 consulting firm. He worked 90 to 100 hours a week, attended only a couple of events at his daughter's middle school. And, he admits to possibly having his priorities misaligned - probably not an easy admission. There are no answers for how to create work-life balance but it is a source of motivation to start living and pay attention, now.
If you knew you had three months to live, what would you do? After the author's dire diagnosis, this question becomes actual rather than hypothetical and we witness his personal journey to his last days. It's an inspirational take on "live like you were dying," and does give some insights on how to wrap things up ("unwinding") in terms of relationships, both casual and intimate. But, like others, I was put off by the narcissistic tone as he reiterated his success as a wealthy CEO throughout the book. His wife and his daughter obviously were important to him but I was left with no real picture of either. And, like others, I questioned how a man set on orchestrating his last ninety days on earth had the time to add one more little thing to his agenda: write a book.
Excellent book that provides insight into one of the many ways one might die, written by an extraordinary man. It takes an extraordinary man to rise to CEO of a major corporation ... and Mr O'Kelly focused his talents on the process of his death, after being told he had just a short time to live. He writes a compelling book that provides insight into the mind of a top businessman and into the process of death via his particular disease (glioblastoma). Like many before him, he realizes "what's important in life" under these difficult circumstances .... He may be more systematic than most in his direct approach to the end of his life and his drive to capture it in this book. It's a short tough read, well worth the time spent.
Considering that this book was written by the man who had only a couple of months to live, and that the book had to be finished by his wife, I find it extremely thoughtful and an extreme act of courage that he attempted to keep track of his experiences and thoughts, and use his precious remaining time to share his life last moments with others, and write them down, so that even the strangers who would read the book after his death, may benefit from it. In his last days of life, he was thinking of others instead of feeling sorry for himself, being bitter and isolating himself from the rest of humanity. Those who gave this book low ratings, obviously understood neither his intention, nor his insightful writing. I also find it distasteful that some readers judged his love for his daughter based on the unrealized trip to Europe. In fact, his enormous love for his daughter has made him trying to delay saying his final goodbyes, he even explained it many times in the text:"How can you ever find the right way to say goodbyes to your most beloved ones? What place, what situation can it ever make less painful?" Instead, he tried to enjoy small little things with his family, and attempted to make the situation less burdensome for his 13-year old daughter, who was not yet a fully formed adult, and for whom the concept of death has come too close, too early in life...I hope that many people will re-examine their own life and life's priorities, thanks to the O'Kelly's moving piece of literature.
First, let me start by saying that this is a different kind of book. There are plenty of moving books out there that describe transitions or tragedy in some way or another. This book is a searing reminder of how vital it is to try and create perfect moments and perfect days, whether you have 3 months or 30 years left to live. And the primary author of this book takes us on a journey of his transition from CEO of a major firm, to his last days: his successful and purposeful life cut short. He does not wallow in self-pity (which perhaps if he did a little, it might make his book feel slightly more approachable to the reader), but instead Gene O'Kelly offers lessons he has drawn from his life, his efforts at closing relationships, and making his last months the best of his life. He offers a path to living life more fully, something we can all use reinforcement with. I read this book until late on a couple of nights, as I grappled with the loss of a parent, and took stock of my own life. I found Gene O'Kelly's insights meaningful and deep, in his measured, succinct, and purposeful writing. Definitely a book well-worth thinking about, as you read it once, twice, or even three times.
I'm really glad I read this book, it opened my eyes it a lot of things and as I get older I find my self thinking a lot more about the end on earth. I hope a lot people out there read this book. I myself think he did a great job of getting ready for the end but he was a richer man and better educated person than us average blue collared worker a lot of the things he did in the end we could not afford to do. I'm sure most of us have a strong and loving family that would be with us till the end also. Please don't think I'm bad talking this book because I'm not I feel this book should be put on must read I read on my Kindle but I'm going to try to find it in a hard cover or paper back to give my wife for Christmas.
